Scope and Content 19th century plan of William Blackwood's shop, No 45 George Street, Edinburgh George Street was originally two opposite rows of plain-fronted houses. As the grand central thoroughfare of James Craig's New Town, it was made wider than its sister streets, Princes Street and Queen Street. Blackwood's shop, formed from the ground floor of the original house at No 45 in 1829, had a salon shop built over the back garden. This elegant square room with a saucer-dome skylight was reached through a shelf-lined corridor from the front shop. William Blackwood (1776-1834), publisher and founder of Blackwood's Magazine, was born in Edinburgh. In 1816 he took the bold step of moving his bookshop from the Old Town to Princes Street. His main office remained in George Street from 1830 until 1972. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
