Scope and Content George Street, Edinburgh Detail of the shop front at No 45 George Street was originally two opposite rows of plain-fronted houses. As the grand central thoroughfare of James Craig's New Town, it was made wider than its sister streets, Princes Street and Queen Street. This Ionic ground-floor colonnade was added in 1829 by Thomas Hamilton when the house became the shop of William Blackwood, and the main office of his Blackwood's Magazine. From the early 19th century a few select shops began to appear in George Street on the ground floors of houses. Later the grand top-lit salon shop, built over the back garden, became an Edinburgh tradition. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
