Scope and Content View of Leith Bank, Bernard Street, Edinburgh Leith Bank was built in 1804 to house the Leith Banking Company. Like many Leith buildings its elegance attests to the wealth of the Port when business was at its height. In addition to the Leith Banking Company, two other banks were established in the building: the Commercial Banking Company of Scotland and the British Linen Company. The latter was established by charter in 1746 to promote the linen industry. With the addition of cars this view is more or less unchanged today. Like most 19th-century buildings, however, the Leith Bank has undergone many changes of use and today it houses, among other things, the Portuguese Consulate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
