Scope and Content Samson's Ribs, Holyrood Park, Edinburgh The magnificent rock formations of Samson's Ribs comprise six-sided columns of basalt that cooled slowly, deep inside the Arthur's Seat volcano. They have always been an object of interest for the people of Edinburgh and visitors to the city. At the time of this illustration there was only a rough path round the base of the rocks. The Queen's Drive was not built till later in the 19th century, when plans drawn up by Prince Albert for the landscaping of Holyrood Park were carried out. Although it is now known for sport and relaxation, Holyrood Park has not always been so. Farming was important for many centuries, as was quarrying, and it was only in the 19th century that the Park took on the recreational role that we know today. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
