Scope and Content The Customs House, Leith, Edinburgh The Customs House was built in 1812 and it reflects the prosperity of business in the port of Leith. It is recorded to have cost just over £12,000. The original building was soon extended into that shown here, which remains today. The interior contains offices and halls for business, though it has been somewhat altered. A separate building at the back provided stables for the horses of the mounted officers. Today, the building provides storage for the National Museums of Scotland. This illustration gives a good idea of the prosperity and jostle of Leith when the port was in its heyday. There are many elegantly dressed passers-by, but hints of work are given by the boats to the right, and the yard on the left. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
