Scope and Content View of Old College, South Bridge, Edinburgh Edinburgh University was founded in 1582, by the City. This building, designed originally to cater for all the teaching and administration needs, was started in 1789, by which time the other various university buildings were ruinous. This building has a complex history. It was originally designed by Robert Adam, but he died shortly after work had started, leaving it only partially completed. The building lay derelict for some years, before work re-started under William Playfair. Playfair's work was dogged by cash shortages and plans were altered accordingly. Private money was to have been raised, but the sum fell far short of that required and it was only completed after Parliament allowed £10,000 a year from the public purse.
