Scope and Content View along Princes Street from Calton Hill, Edinburgh Princes Street has long been thought particularly elegant. In this view much is still newly-built and the street comprises mainly houses, though commerce was beginning to enter. It is clearly a popular place, with gardens and an open view to the Castle. Many of the buildings in the foreground remain today, though at the foot of The Mound only the Royal Scottish Academy has been built. The Mound was designed to connect the Old Town with the New and it comprised earth from the foundations of the New Town. Edinburgh's New Town was started in the mid-18th century in response to the cramped conditions for both dwellings and commerce in the Old Town. At first visitors to Edinburgh described it as elegant but deserted, but it soon became more popular. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
