Scope and Content View of Edinburgh's New Town from Ramsay Gardens At the time of this illustration Princes Street still comprised many private houses, though there was a steady change of use as it became more and more commercial. It is clearly an elegant street, with fine gardens on one side. Only the Royal Scottish Academy stands at the foot of The Mound, as the National Gallery of Scotland was not yet built. The RSA building seen here is smaller than today. It was enlarged in the 1830s with the addition of colonnaded wings on either side. Edinburgh's New Town was started in the mid-18th century in response to the cramped conditions for both dwellings and commerce in the Old Town. At first visitors to Edinburgh described it as elegant but deserted, but it soon became more popular. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
