Scope and Content The Signal Tower, Leith, Edinburgh This tower was built in 1686 by Robert Mylne, the King's Mason, who had been building many tenements in the area of The Shore, which was then the focus of commercial Leith. The Signal Tower was originally designed and used as a windmill. The windows were inserted later, and the top was given the stone battlements seen here. It was only from the early 19th century that it became known as the Signal Tower. The illustration gives a clear idea of the hustle and bustle around the Shore in the early 19th century. This was still the heart of the commercial port, and the masts of many ships may be seen, together with various small boats and many people. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
