Scope and Content Edinburgh University, Old College, South Bridge, Edinburgh The University of Edinburgh was founded by the City in 1582, but this building was not started until 1789, by which time the various buildings in which teaching took place had become ruinous. Old College has a complex history. It was started by Robert Adam, but he died in 1792 and work stopped for over twenty years until the commission was completed by William Playfair. This illustration lacks the main dome, added in 1886 by Rowand Anderson. Private money was to have been raised for the College, but the sum fell far short of that required. Shortage of cash dogged work at all stages, and it was only completed after Parliament allowed £10,000 a year from the public purse to be used. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
