Scope and Content Moray House, Canongate, Edinburgh Moray House was built in the early 17th century and described as an elegant residence with extensive gardens. It soon passed to the Moray family with whom it remained till 1845, though Cromwell lived there in 1648 when he first visited Edinburgh. Although much altered it is still possible to make out the early buildings which face on to the Canongate. An elaborate gateway, which once gave on to the gardens beyond, stands to one side. Moray House today is well known as a place of higher education. In the 19th century, following its use as a private home, it was owned first by the North British Railway Company and then by the Free Church. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
