Scope and Content Old Royal High School of Edinburgh, High School Yards, Edinburgh The Old Royal High School, designed by Alexander Laing, was built in 1777. An early account describes how the windows were covered with wire netting and there was space for 800 boys, divided into five classes. After use as a school the building was converted and incorporated into the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. It was then considerably reconstructed and altered by Sir Rowand Anderson in the early 20th century and is now part of the University of Edinburgh. Today, it is still possible to make out the building in this picture, though it has been much altered and added to. It now houses the Department of Archaeology of the University, and provides space for lecture rooms, laboratories and staff offices. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
