Scope and Content Islandadd Bridge, Bellanoch, Argyll This is a five-span bridge with cast-iron girders supporting cast-iron plates which carry a this fill of gravel which supports the tarmacadam road surface. The girders are supported on masonry piers and abutments, and there are light cast-iron railings. This view shows the elegant cast iron railings. The intersecting-arc design is a feature of other early cast iron girder bridges, such as one at Tanglandford. near Methlick, Aberdeenshire, made by James Abernethy and Co, Aberdeen. This bridge was designed by John Gardner. It was overhauled c1990, and the wrought iron girders were removed, as they were badly corroded and performing no immediately obviously useful function.
