Scope and Content Ferry approaching Belmont Pier, Unst, Shetland This is one of the car ferries which replaced the steamer service from Lerwick as a way to reach the north isles of Shetland, arriving at Belmont pier, built specially for this service. This view shows one of the first generation of the car ferries on the Yell to Unst service, with on the left the tipped rubble breakwater protecting the ferry ramp. The bow of the ferry has been raised as the vessel approaches the pier in a manner which has been outlawed since the capsizing of the cross-channel ferry Herald of Free Enterprise in 1987. These small ferries have now been replaced by larger vessels. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
