Scope and Content Brickworks, Garrabost, Lewis, Ross and Cromarty This works was established by Sir James Matheson to make bricks and clay drainage tiles for the improvement of the Isle of Lewis. Tile drains were then novel, and an effective way to drain wet fields. This view shows the only surviving building on the site, apparently made of bricks from the works. This building has been altered, and its original purpose is not known. Matheson was one of the founding partners of Jardine, Matheson, the well-known Hong Kong merchants. He purchased the Isle of Lewis with his profits from the firm, and set about improving it. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
