Scope and Content Canongate Parish Church, Canongate, Edinburgh Canongate Parish Church was built in 1688 for the use of the congregation from the Abbey Church at Holyrood, when the latter was converted into a chapel for the Knights of the Thistle. It was originally considered to be a very plain structure. The churchyard houses the remains of many Scots, both famous and less well-known. Many of the memorials are quite elaborate, as is this one to Robert Boog, a cutler in the Canongate in the 18th century. Other burials here include the economist Adam Smith, the poet Robert Fergusson, the philosopher Dugald Stewart, and Robert Burns' love, Mrs Agnes McLehose - 'Clarinda'. The churchyard also houses Canongate Mercat Cross, moved here from its original site. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
