Scope and Content The entrance to the Magdalen Chapel, Cowgate, Edinburgh The Magdalen Chapel, a 16th-century almshouse chapel, was founded by Michael Macqueen, a burgess of Edinburgh, and his wife, Janet Rhynd. It was taken over in 1553 by the Incorporation of Hammermen, a medieval trade corporation. Above the round-arched doorway, which faces the Cowgate, is an armorial panel bearing the coats of arms of Michael Macqueen and Janet Rhynd, divided by the crowned hammer of the Hammermen. To the left is a figure of a mason, and to the right, a Hammerman. The Incorporation of Hammermen was an organisation or 'trades union' of metalworkers and represented eight principal trades: pewterers, lorimers, saddlers, blacksmiths, cutlers, locksmiths, armourers and shear-smiths.
