Description View of N face of the rune-inscribed stone.

Collection Collection of photographs by George Chrystal and Francis Maxwell Chrystal, photographers, Edinburgh,

Catalogue Number SC 460251

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of ED 7452

Scope and Content Viking rune stone in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh This stone attracts much attention and curiosity, but it is, in fact, a gift from Sweden. Not far away, a 6th-century Pictish stone was found below the Castle Rock (now in the Museum of Scotland). Rune stones are common in Sweden, but, though there is ample evidence of Norse occupation in Scotland, precisely similar stones have not been found here. It is likely that this stone was originally coloured.

The inscription is a Christian one in the 16-letter futhark, dating the stone in the 11th Century.
