Scope and Content Nos 5-7, north side of Charlotte Square, Edinburgh Charlotte Square, designed by Robert Adam in 1791, the year before he died, is the crowning achievement of his many works of domestic architecture, and one of the most beautiful large residential squares in Europe. Nos 5-7 form the centrepiece of the north side of the square. Four pairs of Corinthian columns rise from the ground floor, and at the centre, above four of these columns, is a large pediment decorated with festoons, balustrades and circular panels. No 5 was built by Adam and Charles Russell in 1796, and sold to John Grant of Rothiemurchus; No 6, built by Orlando Hart in 1798, was sold to Sir John Sinclair in 1806; No 7, built by Edmund Butterworth in 1796, was sold to John Lamont of Lamont.
