Scope and Content Charlotte Square, Edinburgh East end of the north side The north side of Charlotte Square, built to Robert Adam's 1791 design, consists of a row of 11 houses behind a palace-front. The pavilion at each end contains two ingeniously interlocked houses, and not the one very large house originally proposed. The pavilions at either end of the row are slightly advanced, with a doorway to the front between arched Venetian windows, and another doorway in the gable end. Very broad pilasters support the pyramidal roof, the centrepiece of which is a sphinx. The palace façade, in which the centre of a row is marked by pilasters and a pediment, was made fashionable by architects Robert Adam (1728-92) and Sir William Chambers (1723-96), and introduced a grandeur into the architecture of the New Town.
