Description View of George Street and new town from St George's church

Scope and Content View of George Street, Edinburgh, from St George's Church, looking east George Street, the central avenue of James Craig's New Town, was appropriately made wider than its sister streets, Princes Street and Queen Street. It remains the most spacious street in Edinburgh, and possibly the finest as a setting for architecture. This view from the top of the former St George's Church, looks across Charlotte Square gardens and along the length of George Street to St Andrew Square at its eastern end. James Craig's gridiron plan for the New Town in 1767 made ideal use of the site, with its main axis, George Street, lying along the crown of a natural ridge. It allowed spectacular views to the north and south, seen from Queen Street and Princes Street. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
