Scope and Content Railings at St Andrew's Church, (now St Andrew and St George), George Street, Edinburgh George Street, the central avenue of James Craig's New Town, was appropriately made wider than its sister streets, Princes Street and Queen Street. It remains the most spacious street in Edinburgh, and possibly the finest as a setting for architecture. These finials, the ornaments on the top of the railings, are in the shape of spear-heads, a typical motif of the early 18th century. The original buildings in George Street were constructed as two opposite rows of plain-fronted three-storeyed houses, rather monotonous in appearance, with a stockade of iron railings fencing off each property.
