Scope and Content Royal Bank of Scotland Building, 14 George Street, Edinburgh The former Royal Bank of Scotland Building, originally the head office of the Commercial Bank, was designed by David Rhind, and opened in 1847. It stands on the site of James Craig's Physicians' Hall of 1776. The building is a mixture of Greek and Roman styles, with a huge portico supported by six Corinthian pillars. In the pediment above is an interesting group of figures which formerly appeared on the banknotes of the Commercial Bank. The Physicians' Hall, one of two public buildings originally in George Street and the only important building by James Craig in Edinburgh, was a disappointment to the Royal College of Physicians who found 'its internal arrangements not so convenient'.
