Scope and Content Royal Bank of Scotland, 14 George Street, Edinburgh Entrance hall The former Royal Bank of Scotland Building, originally the head office of the Commercial Bank, was designed by David Rhind, and opened in 1847. It stands on the site of James Craig's Physicians' Hall of 1776. The square entrance hall has Ionic columns, and is lit from above. Twin staircases lead from either side to first-floor offices. To the rear is the magnificent banking or telling hall. The mosaic floor is in black, red and grey marble. The columns were originally marbled wood, but in 1885 the Commercial Bank's architect Sydney Mitchell re-faced them in Devonshire marble veined with grey and red, with black Belgian granite bases and bronze capitals.
