Scope and Content Royal Bank of Scotland, 14 George Street, Edinburgh Early 20th-century view of the banking hall The former Royal Bank of Scotland Building, originally the head office of the Commercial Bank, was designed by David Rhind, and opened in 1847. It stands on the site of James Craig's Physicians' Hall of 1776. This photograph, taken on the centenary of the founding of the bank, shows the business floor of the magnificent banking or telling hall in 1910. The Commercial Bank, described as 'the bank of citizens', was founded in 1810 to foster industry. Quickly outgrowing its original premises in Picardy Place, it moved in 1814 to High Street, and finally to its headquarters in George Street in 1847. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
