Scope and Content George Street, Edinburgh North side of the eastern end George Street, the central avenue of the New Town, was originally two opposite rows of plain-fronted houses. It was first interrupted by St Andrew's Church and latterly by the 19th-century Classical and Renaissance façades of banks and insurance houses. The original house (left), and the building next to St. Andrew's Church, behind a Corinthian portico added for the offices of the Caledonian Insurance Company, together form the George Hotel. The Standard Life Assurance Building is on the far right. The first buildings in George Street included a number of plain-fronted tenements, but most of the feus or plots were bought by builders for houses, which were often built speculatively, and sold.
