Description St Margaret's Hope, Pier View from WSW showing SSE front

Date 30/4/1976

Catalogue Number SC 459474

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Pier, St Margaret's Hope, South Ronaldsay, Orkney This is a well-constructed masonry pier, with timber rubbing strakes, apparently designed for steamer traffic and for deep-draughted fishing boats. Until World War II South Ronaldsay was an island, and St Margaret's Hope its port. This view shows the pier from the south west. The large, finely jointed stones of which it is built are evident. The fishing boats were typical of the vessels using the pier in the 1970s; more recently it has been used for ship repair. This pier supplanted the small private piers and quays of the village of St Margaret's Hope as deeper-draughted vessels came into more general use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
