Scope and Content Millmannoch, Ayrshire This was a small water-powered corn mill, built of sandstone rubble in 1788, and extended upwards and re-equipped in the early 20th century. It had three pairs of stones and an oat bruiser, occasionally powered by a tractor by 1976. This view shows the sack hoist, used to raise grain sacks to the first and attic floors. The belt drive from the first floor can be seen on the right. The handles on the cords in front of the hoist drum were the controls for the hoist. This was the last traditional corn mill to operate in southern Ayrshire. It was originally powered by an overshot waterwheel. This was replaced in the early 20th century by a water turbine, driving the stones through a belt. And disused by the mid 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
