Scope and Content Millmannoch, Ayrshire This was a small water-powered corn mill, built of sandstone rubble in 1788, and extended upwards and re-equipped in the early 20th century. It had three pairs of stones and an oat bruiser, occasionally powered by a tractor by 1976. This view shows the small roller mill used for the bruising of oats to make them suitable for horse fodder. The wooden hopper above was loaded from the attic floor. This was the last traditional corn mill to operate in southern Ayrshire. It was originally powered by an overshot waterwheel. This was replaced in the early 20th century by a water turbine, driving the stones through a belt. And disused by the mid 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
