Description New Lanark, New Buildings Detail of frontage on New Lanark Road, from S

Date 1/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 458866

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Part of New Buildings, New Lanark, Lanarkshire The first buildings on this site were some single-storey cottages. David Dale built a row of tenements to replace them in the late 1790s, and Robert Owen later heightened them. This view shows the bottom two floors of part of New Buildings, before restoration. There was an internal wooden stair in each block, with a large room forming each house, later adapted by inserting divisions. This range was later rehabilitated using workers employed under the Community Programme of the Manpower Services Agency. It is now housing, with one house open to the public.
