Scope and Content Bridge, Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal, Manse Road Basin, Linlithgow, West Lothian The Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal was built to connect Edinburgh with the Forth and Clyde Canal at Falkirk. Apart from a flight of locks at the Falkirk end, the canal is all on the same level. It was built to take barges, with fixed bridges. This view shows the bridge at the east end of the Linlithgow basin, on the occasion of a trip organised by the Linlithgow Union Canal Society on a recovered Union Canal scow (barge), hauled by a horse. The bow of the scow is in the left foreground. The Union and Forth and Clyde canals are being restored to navigation in the Millennium Link project, due to be completed in 2001.
