Scope and Content View of Inveraray from Dun na Cuaiche, Argyll and Bute Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who inherited the title in 1743, initiated the removal of the town of Inveraray to a new site 0.6km to the south. A plan for the new town was drawn up in 1744 by the duke and Lord Milton (1692-1766). Robert Mylne (1734-1811) was the architect responsible for much of the design of the town. In 1774 he sketched the town front, unifying the gaps between the main street, the avenue and Dalmally Road with an arcaded screen-wall. The building of the town was a complex process which lasted over 30 years, the original plan having been radically changed. The 5th Duke, who inherited the title in 1770, oversaw much of the building of the new town and the demolition of the old. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
