Scope and Content View of north cellar in Salmon Draught Cottage, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This cottage, which is still occupied by estate fishermen, is situated on the north-west shore of Loch Shira, an inlet of Loch Fyne. Freshwater springs at the shore attract the salmon waiting to swim up the River Shira. This fish-cellar, which is the larger of the two cellars, is floored with stone slabs. It has a lead-lined shelf on two sides which would have been used to inspect and grade the salmon. To the left is a net for the salmon. This cottage does not appear on 18th-century estate maps and it is likely that it was built by Dugald McKellar in 1799. As early as 1596 the 'fishing of Portinstonich near the Kirk of Kilmalew' was one of the rights of the Argyll estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
