Scope and Content Entrance doorway to mill at Carloonan, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute Built of local rubble, this ruined mill incorporates some mid-18th-century masonry. It may date to 1748 but was repaired or much rebuilt in 1772 after the spate that destroyed the old Aray Bridge. This is the entrance in the south gable wall to the ground floor of the mill. It is a segmental-headed archway through which carts would have gone to be loaded or unloaded. In the 19th century this opening was filled by a smaller door and a window. Situated on the east bank of the River Aray, this mill was used until the last quarter of the 19th century. There had been a mill on the site since 1577, when Archibald, 6th Earl of Argyll, granted the mill and land in a feu-charter to Archibald MacVicar. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
