Scope and Content The 'Great Shade' from the south-east, Malt Land Square, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute In 1774 the architect Robert Mylne (1733-1814) designed the 'Great Shade', a workshop which eventually formed the west side of the courtyard at Malt Land Square, 1km north-west of Inveraray Castle. It is still used as the estate sawmill. Not all visitors approved of Mylne's designs. Dorothy Wordsworth, in her 'Recollections of a Tour made in Scotland in 1803', described them as 'broad, out-spreading, fantastic and unintelligible buildings'. She was 'disgusted' with the farm buildings. John, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806), was interested in agriculture and science and encouraged advanced farming methods on his estate at Inveraray.
