Scope and Content The 'Great Shade', Malt Land Square, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute In 1774 the architect Robert Mylne (1733-1814) designed the 'Great Shade', a workshop which eventually formed the west side of the courtyard at Malt Land Square, 1km north-west of Inveraray Castle. It is still used as the estate saw mill. Three storeys high, the façade had five open arches, now filled with glazing of early 19th-century character. The voussoirs which form the arch are made of brick. The corrugated metal roof of late 19th-century character replaced the original slated roof. This large building served a variety of estate purposes, as well as providing working areas for wrights and smiths. The crane would have been used to hoist heavy timbers into the upper floor.
