Scope and Content View of former carriage-house, Malt Land Square, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This group of 18th-century office and farm buildings stands 1km north-west of Inveraray Castle. Work was begun by John Adam (1721-92) on a coach-house to abut the garden wall in 1760-1. The court was finished by Robert Mylne in 1776-84. The former carriage-house, to the right, was designed as a single storeyed structure with a hipped roof. Its five-bay arcade has been infilled and the walls heightened to form two dwellings. When built, it had an adjacent range of cottages and stables. The decision to create a courtyard, 98m in length, had probably been made by 1774 when Mylne began to design the 'Great Shade', seen to the left. It eventually formed the west side of the courtyard.
