Copy of B 19162

Scope and Content South arcade of hay-barn from south, Malt Land Square, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This detached hay-barn was originally built in the 1770s, possibly designed by John Adam (1721-92). By 1776 it had been decided to complete the court of farm and office buildings. As a result of this, Robert Mylne (1733-1814) made changes to the barn. The south façade, heightened by Mylne, consisted of a five-bay arcade. The piers, or supports between the arches, are built of rubble. The projected mouldings, or imposts, on the top of the piers are made of polished stone. John, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806), was interested in agriculture and science and encouraged advanced farming methods on his estate at Inveraray. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
