Scope and Content Garron Lodge, Garron Bridge, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806), inherited Inveraray in 1770, and was responsible for much building on the policies and continuing the work of the 3rd Duke. The architect Robert Mylne (1733-1814) did a lot of work for the 5th Duke. This porter's lodge at Garron Bridge was designed by Mylne and built in 1783-4, although Mylne's plan was not fully executed. This is the south front of the lodge, which is built of whitewashed and harled rubble with black-painted ashlar dressings. Mylne designed a central doorway in a round-arched recess, flanked by sash-and-case windows with a single-arched doorway in each wing. It is unclear whether there were ever doors within these recesses, which are now blocked. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
