Scope and Content Detail of cross-loop on Dubh Loch Bridge, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This bridge, which gives access to the east side of Glen Shira, had its specifications drawn up in 1783 by Robert Mylne (1733-1814). An estimate of £312 10s was accepted from John Tavish, mason, with his guarantee to maintain the bridge for seven years. This detail shows the construction of the bridge. At the bottom there are the two orders of voussoirs, which make up the arch. They are surmounted by a projecting band, or hoodmould, which defines the arch and throws off the rain. Above the hoodmould is a line of close-set plain corbels, on which the main parapet rests. The parapet is decorated with a cross-shaped loophole. The bridge is mainly built of rubble, although ashlar has been used for the inner arch. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
