Scope and Content View of Dubh Loch Bridge from the west, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This bridge, which gives access to the east side of Glen Shira, had its specifications drawn up in 1783 by Robert Mylne (1733-1814). An estimate of £312 10s was accepted from John Tavish, mason, with his guarantee to maintain the bridge for seven years. The Dubh Loch Bridge was one of only two designs by Mylne in a Gothic style. Rising from the abutments, the refuges on the right, which enabled foot passengers to stand aside from wheeled traffic, are corbelled and battlemented quarter-circle towers. The bridge has a level roadway of 5.8m wide, within parapets 0.35m high which rest on close-set plain corbels. Mylne had designed pointed archways to go across the road at either end of the bridge but these were never built. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
