Scope and Content View of Dubh Loch Bridge from the north-west, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806), was interested in agriculture and science and encouraged advanced farming methods on his estate at Inveraray. In the 1780s, better access was needed to the fertile fields on the east side of Dubh Loch. This stone bridge has a single segmental arch with two orders of voussoirs, or units of stone which make up the arch. A hoodmould above the voussoirs defines the arch which springs from rounded abutments with sloped copings. The bridge, which gives access to the east side of Glen Shira, had its specifications drawn up in 1783 by Robert Mylne (1733-1814). An estimate of £312 10s was accepted from John Tavish, mason, with his guarantee to maintain the bridge for seven years. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
