Scope and Content View of Maam Steading from the west, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806), was interested in agriculture and science and encouraged advanced farming methods on his estate at Inveraray. Designed by Robert Mylne (1733-1814) Maam Steading was the last stage in the Duke's experimental farms. The barn is a two-storeyed rectangular structure, built of local rubble. There are extensive remains of the original harling, 'not quite white'. The roof, originally slated, is now covered with corrugated metal, but is the same shape as the original roof. The side wings, which abut the central barn, originally had seven open bays, now boarded up, which were for loading, and for controlling the draught to dry hay and corn. The buildings were specifically designed and sited for the purpose of drying crops. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
