Scope and Content View of the south elevation of the central block of Maam Steading, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806), encouraged advanced farming methods on his estate at Inveraray. Designed by Robert Mylne (1733-1814) Maam Steading was the last stage in the Duke's experimental farms. The barn, sited in a position to create the maximum draught for hay-drying, has large central pointed openings at each level, on both sides, which were used for loading and draught control. There are blocked arch-pointed doorways in the side-bays. In the upper storey, there are circular openings. The buttresses, which flank the central opening, rise to the base of a gabled pediment which contains a large blocked circular opening, or oculus. The parapet is crenellated throughout.
