Scope and Content View of Maam Steading from the south-east, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll (1723-1806), encouraged advanced farming methods on his estate at Inveraray. Designed by Robert Mylne (1733-1814) Maam Steading was the last stage in the Duke's experimental farms. The existing structure consists of an almost complete hollow semi-circle, formed by two wings, abutting a central barn with a crenellated parapet. The steading is still used, and in the courtyard there is a modern Dutch barn and sheep-handling unit. The yard in front of the steading was dug and paved by Robert Lemon in 1799. By the 1790s, the Duke's achievements in farming and agriculture were famous, and many people came to see the estate, including the barn at Maam, which some renamed 'Hay Castle'.
