Scope and Content Well-house from south-south-east, Bealach an Fhuarain, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute This well-house, 1km south-west of the castle, was built for the 3rd Duke of Argyll in 1747-8. From 1774 onwards, water was piped from the spring to serve Inveraray New Town and in 1803, gates were fitted by the estate blacksmith to protect the supply. The ornamental south-east façade rises from a level plinth four courses (or blocks) high. It incorporates a semicircular-headed arch. The voussoirs (wedge-shaped stones forming the arch) spring from the plinth. The voussoirs, apart from the keystone, are decorated with shallow irregular channels, like worm tracks, known as vermiculation. This style of ornament is also applied to alternate blocks of the moulded cornice and gabled pediment. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
