Scope and Content View of Garden or Frew's Bridge over the River Aray from the south-west, Inveraray estate, Argyll and Bute Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who succeeded to the title in 1743, was responsible for replacing the 15th-century Inveraray Castle with the present castle. In 1758 he commissioned John Adam (1721-92) to design a bridge to span the River Aray. The contract was awarded to David Frew, an Edinburgh mason. The bridge is of classical design with a single shallow elliptical arch. There are Roman Doric porticoes set at the level of the base of the arch leading to passages which contain stone seats. The abutments at the side of the arch are marked by semicircular projections which carry pedestrian refuges. The moulded cornice, supported on a series of corbels, supports a balustrade with moulded coping. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
