Description Inveraray Castle, Gate Piers View of urn on top of gate pier

Catalogue Number SC 457797

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 7887 CN

Scope and Content Detail of urn on gate pier at Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who succeeded to the title in 1743, was responsible for replacing the 15th-century Inveraray Castle with the present castle. He also initiated the removal of the town of Inveraray half a mile south to a new site. This urn surmounts one of the sandstone gate piers which flank the entrance to the private gardens from the north-east forecourt. The mid-/late 18th-century urn is decorated with a ball-shaped finial. The gate piers were brought from Rosneath Castle (also a property of the Dukes of Argyll) Dunbartonshire, in 1950. Rosneath Castle, begun for the 6th Duke in 1803, was designed by Joseph Bonomi (1739-1808), a favoured Italian designer of country houses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
