Scope and Content Gate piers at Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, who succeeded to the title in 1743, was responsible for replacing the 15th-century Inveraray Castle with the present castle. He also initiated the removal of the town of Inveraray half a mile south to a new site. The gate piers which flank the entrance to the private gardens from the north-east forecourt were brought from Rosneath Castle (also a property of the Dukes of Argyll) Dunbartonshire, in 1950. They are of fine-grained white sandstone. Each pier consists of a pillar, 0.57m square, with a moulded base standing on a plinth. At the top of the pillar there is a projecting cornice surmounted by a tall urn. The piers date to the mid-/late 18th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
