Scope and Content Detail of fireplace in the Tapestry Drawing Room in Inveraray Castle, Argyll and Bute John, 5th Duke of Argyll, inherited the title in 1770, and began to transform the interior of the castle in 1782 in accordance with fashionable taste. There was a strong French influence seen in the tapestry, furniture and carpets installed in the 1780s. The white marble chimneypiece was purchased by the 5th Duke of Argyll in 1800 from Bellevue House in Edinburgh, and may have been designed by Robert Adam (1728-92). On the jambs there are two lightly draped female figures on circular pedestals. There was originally a mirror above the chimneypiece but this was replaced by a portrait of Lady Charlotte Campbell as Flora. It was painted by John Hoppner, who died in 1810. It is flanked by two floral borders painted in the 1780s by le Girardy. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
